A recent study identified a molecular pathway in brain linking abnormal sugar modifications in proteins to depressive behaviours. Researchers analysed O-glycosylation patterns in brains of chronically stressed mice and found a decrease in enzyme St3gal1, which caused small changes in sugar chains. This disrupted both the connections and stability of neural circuits, affecting emotion regulation.
