Chennai police detained hundreds of sanitation workers in a midnight crackdown, ending a 13-day sit-in outside Ripon Building. The workers, from the NUML division, had protested since August 1 against outsourcing their jobs to a private contractor. Police acted after the Madras High Court, on August 13, ordered eviction of the workers who refused to end their protest.
