Researchers at VIT Chennai developed the Aerial Eye Tree Detection Algorithm (AETDA), which uses high-resolution drone imagery and the YOLOv8 deep learning model to automatically count & classify individual tree crowns (banana, oil palm, coconut) with an overall accuracy (mAP50) of 0.722. This scalable system provides a fast, accurate alternative to manual surveys.
