The China-made aircraft, which crashed in Bangladesh killing 27 people, is considered an upgraded version of the Chengdu J-7, which itself is a copy of the Soviet-era MiG-21. The China-made jet is also referred to as 'grandpa jet'. Between 2011 and 2013, Bangladesh received 16 F-7 BGI jets. In 2013, China reportedly discontinued the J-7 series.
