Scientists have solved the mystery of Mars' dune gullies - and it's not flowing water. A new study led by Utrecht University's Lonneke Roelofs shows that blocks of frozen CO2, or dry ice, slide and explode on sand slopes as they vaporize, blasting out long trenches. The finding reshapes how scientists understand Martian surface processes.
