Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya said the downfall of Kingfisher Airlines began after then-Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told him not to downsize the airline. Referring to 2008 recession, Mallya recalled telling Mukherjee, "I can't afford to operate under these depressed economic circumstances." Mallya said Mukherjee was against job cuts and assured that banks would support him.
