The Delhi High Court said that though adultery is no longer treated as a criminal offence in India, it may still carry civil consequences. The court stated that decriminalisation of adultery is not a "licence to enter into intimate relationships beyond marriage, free from civil or legal implications". It added spouse can sue partner's lover for causing emotional distress.
