A University of Sydney study led by Dr Benjamin Hunter and Associate Professor Sean Lal has revealed that diabetes changes the shape of the heart. Published in EMBO Molecular Medicine, the research shows type 2 diabetes alters energy production, proteins and calcium handling in heart cells. These disruptions lead to fibrous tissue buildup in heart muscle, the study added.
