India became a Republic on 26 January 1950, but the date was chosen to honor the 1930 Purna Swaraj declaration. The first Republic Day parade at Rajpath took place in 1955. Each year, a chief guest from another country is invited. The Indian Constitution, adopted on this day, is the longest written constitution in the world.
