Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India doesn’t encourage cryptocurrencies as they do not have a sovereign backing. Goyal clarified that there’s no outright ban on cryptocurrencies which don't have Central government backing but they're heavily taxed to discourage their use. "We don’t want anybody to be stuck at some point with a cryptocurrency that has no backing," he added.
