A new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association reveals that dormant bacteria in arterial plaques can trigger heart attacks. Researchers from Finland and the UK found bacterial biofilms in cholesterol-laden plaques, which may activate during infections, causing inflammation, plaque rupture, and myocardial infarction.
