An ICMR-led five-year newborn screening programme running from 2019 to 2024 across India has reduced sickle cell disease mortality in children from 20% to 30% to under 5%. The study screened over 63,000 newborns, identifying 546 cases. The early diagnosis enabled timely care, significantly improving outcomes and supporting prevention through family screening in high-prevalence regions.
