Japan's Akatsuki, the only active spacecraft orbiting Venus, was decommissioned by JAXA on September 18. Launched in 2010, its first orbital attempt failed due to engine malfunction, leaving it adrift for five years. Using secondary thrusters, it was guided into Venus orbit in 2015 and spent over eight years studying its dense, hostile atmosphere, marking Japan's first planetary orbiter success.
