A rare red arc seen near New Zealand's Nugget Point Lighthouse revealed a leak from Earth's ring current. The ring current system is a donut-shaped circuit carrying millions of amps around the planet, created by opposing motions of electrons and ions in Earth's rotating magnetic field. Sometimes, thermal energy from this current leaks into the atmosphere below.
