ESA's Solar Orbiter has identified the Sun's two particle engines, i.e, solar flares, which release electrons explosively, and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which emit particles more gradually. By measuring particles close to the Sun, scientists can now better forecast space weather, protecting satellites, spacecraft, and astronauts from high-energy solar events.
