Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded the island nation and claimed the northern part of it as its own. Turkey maintains a large military presence there and recognises only the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The United Nations, along with Greek Cypriots, considers this an illegal occupation and continues to call for Cyprus’s sovereignty and reunification.
