Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that Neanderthals rendered fat from animal bones 1,25,000 years ago in what they call "fat factory". Neanderthals broke bones into small pieces using stone hammers and boiled them to extract fat. Discovered at a site in Neumark-Nord near Germany's Leipzig, the bones were heavily fragmented and had been harvested from at least 172 large animals.
