While moving Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, on Wednesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman cited WHO and World Bank's data to back the tobacco tax overhaul. She highlighted that since the past decade, "cigarettes haven't become expensive in relation to consumers' purchasing power index." The Bill increases central excise duty on manufactured, unmanufactured tobacco, and its products.
