A study by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has identified a yeast-like fungus living inside the lac insect as the source of lac dye's red colour. This microbial partner not only creates the crimson pigment but also provides essential nutrients the insect can't get alone, showcasing a remarkable symbiotic "outsourcing" of complex biological processes.
