Germany's ex-Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected as next president of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), securing 167 votes in a secret ballot initiated by Russia. Fourteen countries abstained, and seven votes were cast for diplomat Helga Schmid. Baerbock will succeed current UNGA President Philemon Yang of Cameroon at the start of the UNGA's 80th session in September.
