A new study revealed that the Moon’s largest crater, the South Pole-Aitken basin, was formed by a northern asteroid impact billions of years ago. The collision exposed radioactive material known as KREEP - short for potassium, rare earth elements and phosphorus. The elements, which once floated in the molten layers of the Moon’s early surface, have now settled unevenly.
