Scientists have discovered PelV-1, a giant virus with a record-breaking tail stretching up to 2.3 micrometres. Its tail is longer than any virus appendage documented to date. Found in the Pacific Ocean, PelV-1 infects marine phytoplankton and features a complex genome with metabolic and light-harvesting genes.
