Over one-fifth of oceans globally have gotten noticeably darker in the last two decades, a new study by researchers from University of Plymouth showed. The darkening of the ocean is attributed to the shrinking of photic zones, the upper layer of water where sunlight penetrates, allowing photosynthesis to occur. The decline in photic zones is threatening the underwater marine life.
