A row erupted after gold was found missing from gold-cladded copper panels donated by Vijay Mallya to Sabarimala temple in 1998. In 2019, the panels were given to sponsor Unnikrishnan Potty for re-plating, with inventories listing the items merely as "copper plates". While old documents revealed the panels originally weighed 42.8kg, shortfall of 4.54kg gold has been found after re-plating.
