Scientists have confirmed Stephen Hawking's 1971 prediction that black hole event horizons cannot shrink. Analysis of the January GW250114 merger, where two black holes collided 1.3 billion light-years away, showed the resulting black hole's surface area grew from 240,000 to 400,000 sq km. Improved gravitational wave detection also validated Kerr's 1963 theory on black hole behaviour.
