Gujarat has become the first Indian state to launch a genome sequencing project focused on tribal communities to tackle inherited diseases. Under the project, 2,000 individuals from various tribal groups across 17 districts will be sequenced to identify genetic disorders, including sickle cell anaemia. The initiative is being implemented by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre (GBRC).
