After inventing telephone, Alexander Graham Bell wanted people to answer calls with 'Ahoy'. However, Thomas Alva Edison, known for inventing light bulb, suggested using 'hello' as a greeting in 1877, News18 reported. By 1880, one of the earliest telephone directories included instructions to start calls with 'hello'. Now, it's recognised globally and appears in many languages in over 100 nations.
