India's wild Asian elephant population is estimated at 22,446, according to the Synchronous All India Elephant Estimation (SAIEE) 2021-25. The number is 17.81% lower than the 2017 estimate of 27,312. However, the report said that the two figures are not directly comparable due to changes in methodology. The latest estimate should be treated as a new baseline.
