New government data showed that rural Total Fertility Rate (TFR) dropped to the critical level of 2.1 children per woman in 2023. As per a Hindustan Times report, this is the first time rural TFR has fallen to the replacement level, at which a population stabilises instead of growing. National TFR was recorded at 1.9 and urban TFR at 1.5.
