A crime in India was committed every five seconds in 2023, according to the National Crime Records Bureau's report. A total of 6.24 million cognisable crimes were recorded in 2023, marking a 7.2% rise from 2022. Of these, 3.76 million cases were filed under IPC and 2.48 million under Special and Local Laws (SLL). Cyber crimes surged by 31.2%.
