Jupiter formed about 4.6 billion years ago, researchers stated. The finding came as researchers studied the size and cooling rates of chondrules, tiny molten droplets found in meteorites, using computer simulations, which revealed that Jupiter's powerful gravity triggered ancient collisions. This timing matches when Jupiter was rapidly gaining gas, just 1.8 million years after solar system formed.
