Afghanistan's Kabul is at risk of becoming the first modern city to completely run out of water, according to a report by the NGO Mercy Corps. Kabul's groundwater extraction exceeds natural recharge and nearly half of the city’s boreholes are already dry, report said. Nearly 80% of groundwater is unsafe, with high levels of sewage and arsenic posing health risks.
