Manikchandra Bandyopadhyay, a Tantra ascetic from Bhurshut, a medieval kingdom in the Hooghly and Howrah districts of West Bengal, was the founder of Kolkata's revered Pute Kali temple, which is around 500 years old. Built during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar, the temple originally had a canopy of Nipa Palm (Golpata) leaves and was later renovated into a concrete structure.
