Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge wrote to PM Narendra Modi to elect the Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker. The position has remained vacant for two consecutive terms for the first time in independent India, he mentioned. "It has been a well-established convention to appoint the Deputy Speaker from among the members of the principal opposition party," Kharge wrote in the letter.
