Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, to impose a higher excise duty on tobacco and related products once the GST compensation cess ends. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also clarified that the Bill doesn't levy an additional tax on tobacco. "Excise duty existed before GST," she told the Parliament.
