A German study suggests that loss of smell may be an early warning sign of Alzheimer's, even before memory decline. Researchers found brain immune cells (microglia) mistakenly damage nerve fibres linking smell and vital brain regions. Published in 'Nature Communications', the findings could aid earlier diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's.
