Scientists have discovered marine creatures in two oceanic trenches in northwest Pacific that sustain themselves not by eating organic matter, like most animals, but by converting chemicals into energy. These chemosynthesis-based communities are nourished by hydrogen sulfide and methane-rich fluids seeping from the seafloor. The ecosystems were found at depths greater than Mount Everest's height.
