Meghalaya is home to 677 wild elephants, the second-highest in Northeast India after Assam, as per India’s first DNA-based elephant census. Conducted by WII under Project Elephant, the survey used genetic ID from dung samples for accurate counts. Most elephants inhabit the Garo Hills, with habitats facing rising human–elephant conflict.
