Microplastics can alter the gut microbiome in humans, potentially influencing diseases like depression and cancer, a new study stated. Using gut cultures from five healthy volunteers, researchers exposed samples to five common types of microplastics. The exposed cultures showed increased acidity and bacterial metabolic changes that resembled patterns seen in depression and colorectal cancer.
