Microplastics and nanoplastics (MNPs) can trigger malignant changes in lung cells that are associated with the development of cancer, according to Medical University of Vienna's research published in Journal of Hazardous Materials. Research found that lung cells absorbing polystyrene MNPs showed increased DNA damage and activated cell growth signalling pathways, early signs of cancer formation.
