MIT scientists recreated earthquakes in the lab to trace their full energy budget. Findings show only 10% of quake energy causes shaking, less than 1% fractures rock, while ~80% converts to heat - sometimes melting surrounding rock instantly. Results could help predict vulnerabilities in quake-prone regions and improve understanding of underground seismic processes.
