Researchers have found that the mitochondrial DNA present inside human eggs does not accumulate mutations as a woman gets older. The study, published in Science Advances, however, showed that such mutations increase in blood and saliva cells, which suggests that some mechanism protects the oocytes from age-related genetic damage. Mitochondrial mutations can cause diseases like Leigh Syndrome.
