The Siddis came to India from Africa as slaves, traders and soldiers. One of them, Malik Ambar, rose to become a military leader in Western India. He built the Murud Janjira Fort in the Arabian Sea waters in the 16th century as a stronghold for Siddi rulers for protection against invaders. The fort has secret passages and remained unconquered.
