A study of human remains in Belgium's Goyet cave system stated that Neanderthals ate women and children from other communities 45,000 years ago. Researchers identified 101 bone fragments with butchery marks similar to those on animal bones. Scientists link the cannibalism to territorial conflict when Neanderthal populations were shrinking, and Homo sapiens had begun occupying nearby regions.
