Neanderthals had larger jaws than modern humans due to a minor change in DNA. Researchers identified three single-letter changes in a 3,000-letter stretch of Neanderthal genome near SOX9 gene. There are no genes present in this region, but it regulates when SOX9, involved in face development, is activated. These tiny changes gave larger jawbones and broader faces to Neanderthals.
