Apart from wild mammals, seafood and plants, the Neanderthals also devoured maggots, chemical signatures in ancient bones suggested. The theory undermines previous idea that Neanderthals were "hypercarnivores" who topped the food chain with lions and sabre-toothed tigers. They also stored their kills for months, favouring fatty parts over lean meat, and maggots that riddled the decaying carcasses.
