In April 2025, scientists suggested exoplanet K2-18b could be a water-covered Hycean world. But new research from ETH Zurich, Max Planck, and UCLA finds such sub-Neptunes are unlikely ocean planets. Chemical reactions between atmospheres and interiors make these worlds more hostile, reducing chances of habitability once thought possible.
