The world’s first randomised controlled trial for broken heart syndrome, led by Dr David Gamble at University of Aberdeen, found patients with the syndrome improved after 12 weeks of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or an exercise program involving swimming, cycling and aerobics. Both interventions enhanced maximal oxygen consumption, six-minute walk distances and cardiac energy metabolism.
