Scientists have developed ultra-thin 'metalenses' that could make cameras in phones, drones, and satellites smaller, lighter, and cheaper without losing quality. Using stacked metamaterial layers, these lenses can focus multiple colours of unpolarised light simultaneously. The breakthrough promises compact, efficient optical devices and easier manufacturing.
