Newborns can feel pain before they can cognitively understand or emotionally react to it, a new study found. It showed that the pain-sensing network matures at 34–36 weeks after conception, allowing even premature infants to feel pain. The emotional-response network reaches maturity at 36–38 weeks, and the network which is key to understanding the pain's significance matures after 42 weeks.
